Angela Ivask, professor of genetics, received scholarship of teaching and learning

In 2022 it was already the eight call for applications for the scholarship of teaching and learning at the UT. The scholarship of teaching and learning is awarded to teaching members for the systematic inquiry into their teaching practices and for disseminating the best practices.

The university’s academic affairs committee has chosen the teaching staff members to receive this year’s scholarships of teaching and learning. Angela Ivask, professor of genetics at the Faculty of Science and Technology received a scholarship among others.

At present, Angela Ivask teaches "Genetics" (6 ECTS) and "General and Behavioral Genetics" (3 ECTS) and in the frame of the scholarship she plans to integrate far more methods of active learning to her courses.

Eleven teams or teaching staff members applied for the scholarship: two from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, three from the Faculty of Social Sciences, three from the Faculty of Science and Technology and three from the Faculty of Medicine. All applicants presented their teaching portfolios (analysis of the development of their teaching) and their action research study project. Through development projects, teaching staff members want to focus on greater collaboration between different courses, more meaningful assessment and support for deep learning.

The scholarship will allow the following teams of teaching staff members to develop their teaching and study its effectiveness.

  • Faculty of Arts and Humanities:
    • Peeter Torop and Maarja Ojamaa
    • Kerli Kraus, Madis Maasing, Mihkel Mäesalu and Anti Selart
  • Faculty of Social Sciences:
    • Ragne Kõuts-Klemm and Kaspar Kruup
    • Anne Reino, Veiko Valkiainen and Veronika Krassavina
  • Faculty of Medicine:
    • Anti Kalda, Joel Lumpre, Gerhard Grents and Alan Altraja
    • Heti Pisarev and Inga Villa
  • Faculty of Science and Technology:
    • Ella Puman and Natalia Saealle
    • Angela Ivask

On deciding the scholarship recipients, the applicants’ past activities in supporting their students and colleagues, developing their teaching, and the anticipated impact of their study on the quality of learning in the unit, in the faculty and in the university as a whole were taken into account. Recipients of the scholarship were selected based on the applications, feedback and discussion by the UT academic affairs committee. Also the 2019 and 2020 scholarship recipients and academic developers of the Centre for Professional Development reviewed the applications, gave feedback and evaluated the applicants.

All scholarship holders will meet in the summer school on 27 and 28 June. The development and study of teaching will also be discussed at the teaching conference “From Lecturer to Lecturer” on 19 January 2023.
